The North Face was founded in 1966 as a climbing equipment retail store in San Francisco by Douglas Tompkins and his wife Suzy Tompkins. In the northern hemisphere, the north side of the peak is covered with ice and snow all year round due to lack of sunlight, making it difficult to climb. The company named "North Side" to challenge the limit. The company was bought by Kenneth "Hap" Klopp two years later. In 2000, North Face was acquired by VF Corporation for US$25.4 million, and North Face became a wholly-owned subsidiary of the latter
